Wandering WonderCon and other bunny day adventures

2 Apr

I’m going to start off by saying that it’s difficult to attend a con for a single day (especially when it is the last day of the con) when all of the tweets and facebook posts about the con during the previous days make you desperate to be there. I mean… the Geek and Sundry Tabletop Day was happening during WonderCon… and OMG! so many awesome people there! Which means that those people would be at WonderCon all day… which means that I fail for not being there on Tabletop Day. Sigh. Initially, I had intended to be at WonderCon all weekend but life happens and I didn’t want to miss celebrating my friend Phil X‘s birthday at his surprise party. Priorities, amiright? Sigh. My Other Car Is The Normandy — Why I Still Love Mass Effect, Part 1

27 Mar

Stewart here…

Traveling through the galaxy, fighting bad guys, and interspecies lovemaking: what's not to love about Mass Effect?

Traveling through the galaxy, fighting bad guys, and interspecies lovemaking: what’s not to love about Mass Effect?

Look, I’ve made no bones about it to people, but I am just a sucker for big epic sci-fi with spaceships.  And often, that gets rewarded with some great stuff in that category.  Yeah, you got your Star Trek, Star Wars, and Battlestar Galactica (and occasionally your Stargate), but that has been a bit absent in TV as of late and slightly there in movies.  However, I managed to find a great fix of it recently while also rediscovering console gaming. Shamrock Shake Shenanigans for all!

17 Mar

My friend Brian, who lives in Chicago, is my fav buddy to share Shamrock Shakes (you know, from McDs?) with. For some reason, Chicago gets them much earlier in the season than Los Angeles. So he’s been torturing me with the precious minty treat since early February. They only showed up here as the months changed.

I have no reason for sharing this with you except that today is St. Patrick’s Day and I’m wishing all of you tasty Shamrock Shakes as you celebrate. And wear your green!

The Philosophy of Gardening: Why Grow Your Own Food?

11 Mar

People ask me why I bother growing my own food. After all, fruit and vegetables are so cheap these days. I live in the city just a block from a supermarket. Why waste my time?

Having grown up in the countryside, my answer is simple: “Why not?” Modern life is busy, hectic, packed. Every advert on TV boasts to shave another few seconds off a task that is already achieved ten times quicker than our parent’s generation could do it. Everywhere people are mainlining coffee and popping pills like PacMan to get them through their week, then wondering why they can’t sleep on weekends and have a heart attack at age 40.

Call me old school, but I think it’s time to slow down. Continue reading

Stop the needless unemployment of innocent dinosaurs! Join the cause!

9 Mar

The day following the season 1 finale of scifi adventure Primeval: New World, it was announced that it’s network would not be renewing. Essentially, the dinosaur romp was cancelled. The blow hit the fans hard- especially considering how the original UK series had been cancelled and saved by the fans. But here we are, on the tails of a fantastic 2-part finale- cliffhanger galore!- sitting on the precipice of a world with no employed dinosaurs.

Random off schedule post because… it’s a T-rex.

21 Feb

So, apparently Primeval: New World (a current obsession of mine, obviously) had the plug pulled this morning. And via twitter and Facebook, I’ve been participating in the posts to save it- it’s a fun show! And sometime earlier today, I RT’ed or “liked” the following pic…  Continue reading

When my worlds collide- the creation of crazy in a character

17 Feb

For years, I’ve been curious — what does a script actually say when it calls for a character to be crazy? I know it seems like a weird thing to wonder, but not if you really know me. I have degrees in Psychology and the focus of my research, work, education, and life is a severely dysfunctional population.

Community, no not the TV Show.

9 Feb

Guest post by Lee Daniels.
************************************************************

I thought long and hard for a few days of what to write for my first blog post, after all there’s so much going on right now with Marvel, Star Wars and every Mark Millar comic being turned into a movie, it makes choosing a subject a lot easier with such a huge pool to pick from.

But I wanted to write something that means a lot to me and that most likely means a lot to you to.

The geek community. Continue reading
