Gaming as a non-gamer

17 Feb

Ok, first off… of the people who have written for NerdLush, I am probably the least one to be considered a gamer. Of any kind. I enjoy a good board game but haven’t played one in years because I lived too far from friends, my friends pull the “old and married” card, or… 2020. And while I own multiple game systems, I cannot play many games.

Guest Post!!!~ Oreo.. Oreo.. How tasty art though, Oreo?

2 Sep

Today a new guest poster joins NerdLush, Madame Laura! In her own words- “I worked for several years at an environmental laboratory but am currently a stay-at-home mom of 2. My all-time favorite geeky TV series are the X-Files and anything Star Trek from TNG onward. I am a long-time World of Warcraft player and have made many awesome friends through the game, and enjoy other Blizzard games as well. And my very favorite Nintendo character is Yoshi.” Welcome, Laura!

So, a confession..  I’ve developed a weird thing.  A thing about OREOS.  Oreo has come up with tons of limited-edition flavors over time, and I am apparently their target audience.. I see a new package, and I have to buy it.  Those marketing people know how to get me, and these special flavors seem to be popping onto store shelves more and more frequently in recent months.  My friends have noticed this phenomenon through my numerous Facebook pictures and posts, and I have been requested to share my opinions of these oddities.  I am going to go one geeky step further for NerdLush, and make recommendations on which of my favorite tabletop games would be the best side dish to accompany each unique flavor.

The Dirty Dozen…In Space! — Why I Still Love Mass Effect, Part 3

26 Aug

Stewart here… and some spoilers follow in case you asked…

As promised, this installment focuses squarely on Mass Effect 2, which went from one of my most anticipated games ever to one of my favorite games ever.  I’ve talked about the issues I had with the first game, from the combat mechanics to the seemingly same kind of stronghold used in the sub-missions, but those didn’t deter me from wanting to play ME2.  I loved the story, the characters, and the universe BioWare created in ME1, and wanted to see how the sequel would expand upon that.  And all the trailers promised a darker story, and more reveals into the Reaper menace that was looming on the horizon. Okay, I’ll admit I’m extremely late to the party. Heck, Stu’s already written up a page! But, I wouldn’t be the Casual Gamer if I didn’t have an Overly Delayed Video Game Review for you! (EDIT: This entry has been sitting as a draft for months. Sorry Nerdlush, maybe I need to change this to Overly Delayed Post For Overly Delayed Video Game Review…) Continue reading

Nights At The Round Table

Dee2 here…

You know after the opening shot and the old school game theme music that you’re in for a treat. Think “The Guild” mixed with a little “I.T. Crowd”. I think they’re onto something here. The acting is pretty good and the characters memorable and funny without trying too hard.

Garrus Vakarian is my Wingman — Why I Still Love Mass Effect, Part 2

28 Apr

Stewart here… and some spoilers follow in case you asked…

In this installment, I really want to start by taking the time to focus on the squadmates, and if you’re good about it, friends in the Mass Effect series.  In this case, just to keep things light, I’ll focus on your squadmates from the first game.  Everyone’s got their favorites they want with them on every mission, and I know I feel the same way.  Sure I’ll shift them around in necessity of missions, but there are the “go to” squadmates every player of Mass Effect has.  The only downside of the whole thing is the greedy part of me that wants to take more than two for my squad.

So, in no particular order, here are my thoughts on your team from the first Mass Effect (with some spoilers as to the whole trilogy): Continue reading

Traveling through the galaxy, fighting bad guys, and interspecies lovemaking: what's not to love about Mass Effect?

Traveling through the galaxy, fighting bad guys, and interspecies lovemaking: what’s not to love about Mass Effect?

Look, I’ve made no bones about it to people, but I am just a sucker for big epic sci-fi with spaceships.  And often, that gets rewarded with some great stuff in that category.  Yeah, you got your Star Trek, Star Wars, and Battlestar Galactica (and occasionally your Stargate), but that has been a bit absent in TV as of late and slightly there in movies.  However, I managed to find a great fix of it recently while also rediscovering console gaming. San Diego COMIC-CON 2012 Round-Up Day 2

13 Jul

Stewart here…

Well, its another day at the San Diego Comic-Con, and news is kind of slow here.  Nothing earth-shattering along the lines of The Sandman announcement yesterday has broken yet.  The majority of the day has been about your favorite TV shows returning this fall.  So let’s go with….
