A Quick Rambling- HELD

14 Apr

The first thing I need to say is this- I am damn proud of you, Jill. So… this whole post may be a little biased because Ms. Jill Awbrey is my favorite daughter, friend, and the little sis I never had. Damn proud of you, kid.

Now that that’s out of the way, I hate spoilers Continue reading

Big or small, does size really matter?

7 May

Before Avengers: Endgame was released, I was talking to a friend about it and how excited I was to see it. He was excited, too. But then I reminded him that he hadn’t seen Captain Marvel yet (which, what the hell, dude?), so he couldn’t see Endgame for a bit still. He agreed and then said, “I’ll just wait til it’s streaming in a few weeks”. Continue reading

Some Thoughts and Plenty of SPOILERS on AVENGERS: ENDGAME!

6 May

Stewart here…

Well, I can only assume you have managed over the weekend to see the biggest thing of the summer so far (or maybe THE biggest thing of the summer), by somehow seeing Avengers: Endgame. If you have, I’ll be here to talk about the key points, call backs, and poignant deaths of this three hour epic film. If you haven’t yet, you should go ahead and do that now (it’s not like you’ll be hurting to find it at your local multiplex), because this be full of SPOILERS. So if you haven’t, come back later. I’ll wait.

Cinema Therapy, class is in session

29 May

So I can’t decide if this will be a semi-regular post series or just a one off but I wanted to talk about a tool I use in my work. As most followers of this site know, I work in mental health. What you may not be aware of is that I work with incarcerated men. A very interesting, and notoriously difficult, population.

Once I realized how my nerdy interest in super heroes could help me in my work with adolescent boys, I figured that it was worth a try to get a buy-in from the adults. And it worked. So I gained a bit of a rep and I’m the one the guys run up to when they want to talk comics or movies or what have you. Not only do I work with individuals but I also run therapeutic groups- more like psychoeducation groups but still, we have some awesome discussions. When I was finally at a point where I could create my own groups I decided to run “Cinema Therapy” groups. Continue reading

Justice League was… better than I thought.

8 Jan

This post may seem a little out of date, but I wanted to share my thoughts anyways…

I have seen a lot of comments the last month or so about Justice League being a failure. But I want to state otherwise. Sure, Warner Brothers and DC aren’t likely to have made their money back and may not make as much as they hoped by the time it leaves theaters but… here’s the thing- I have enjoyed only one DC film since Dark Knight Rises and that was Wonder Woman. Sure, I saw Man of SteelBatman versus Superman, and even Suicide Squad in the theater but they were crap movies and they pissed me off more than anything. Wonder Woman finally made me interested in DC films again and then the trailers for Justice League cemented that I was going to see this one in the theater (it was touch and go after Suicide Squad, honestly).

Some Random Thoughts on STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI! (SPOILERS)

30 Dec

Stewart here…

As the latest installment in the Star Wars series hits theaters, it’s clear that this has become divisive in a way that The Force Awakens wasn’t. Instead of complaining about the familiar steps that Force Awakens takes, some fans are now complaining about the exact opposite in The Last Jedi. For my money, and as I’ll discuss here, there are things about the movie that I have trouble with, but they are not deal breaking type things that some fans have lost their marbles over. I honestly loved this movie for veering out of just being a retread of the previous movies, while also doing something that’s been hard to do (at least successfully in my view): make an original Star Wars film. But let’s just get to some broad non-spoilers related stuff before jumping into all the spoilery goodness… Continue reading

Dusting Off The Shelf: Letter Z!!!

13 Nov

And finally we’ve reached the end of this series. Perhaps I’ll do it again. As noted in my last post, HQ recently moved and in doing so I found even more DVDs that I own and have never watched. I really need to stop doing that. And to end the series, I thought we’d go out on a silly note- I give you Zerophilia.

Dusting Off The Shelf: Letter Y

6 Nov

OK… well, this series of posts was meant to be over months ago, however in sort of a whirlwind NerdLush HQ moved. Like to another city. And life got a little whackadoodle. But I’ve finally had a chance to finish up, so let’s check in with the second to last… The Year That Trembled.
