California Republic Comic Con, bringing nerds together for a second year

16 Oct

Recently we took a jaunt north to Merced to check out the second year of California Republic Comic Con. Now, growing up in the Central Valley, we never would’ve thought we’d be heading to Merced for a comic convention… to be honest, most of the Valley just didn’t seem big enough, or nerd friendly enough, to host. But this event proved to us that today we’d be wrong.

Not a whole lot to say, as this event is small (but growing!), so let me just list out some of the good things and a few things we’d like to see improved next year.

  • excellent cosplay showing. Even that Pennywise who was following us around. Actually, especially Pennywise. But seriously, there were lots more cosplayers than we had expected- and the family cosplays were so fun!- and that was awesome! Also, we knew we were heading in the right direction as we drove to the fairgrounds because of the prolific cosplay groups- something that we usually only notice in larger cities, like LA.
  • the dealer room also was a good show. Multiple local valley comic and collectible stores, as well as numerous local artists. The room was full, but you didn’t feel cramped. (Bonus, the fans from that building at the fairgrounds worked beautifully and the room was comfortable, even though there were lots of people wandering about)
  • loved the idea of the film festival. And Laser Tag! However, we thought that maybe they should be separated next year as the few minutes of the film festival we caught were distracted by the laser tag players noise.
  • the gaming area was the saddest thing ever. To be honest, it was 4 game stations. We were impressed with the titles of the games (classics!) but really felt the room could have been better utilized if there had been some table top games available, or a few MAGIC or Pokemon games…
  • the weather was beautiful. Mid September in the Central Valley could be hot but on that weekend it was the high 80’s and sunny. Quite lovely for a little outside time. Excellent timing, CRCC.
  • food trucks!

Overall, we had a good time and would attend again. Check out the album of pics here!

ARROW Season 6×01, “Fallout” recap

14 Oct

AND welcome back, Arrowheads! Last season saw a lot of drama happen, as Oliver Queen became the new mayor of Star City. I mean, there was drama regarding budget plans, gun control, how to revitalize the city, and…what else? Oh yeah, a maniac called Prometheus, hiding in Ollie’s own midst as District Attorney Adrian Chase, was waging a physical and psychological vendetta against Ollie and Team Arrow. This lead to a big showdown between Team Arrow and Prometheus on the island of Lian Yu, and Ollie saving his son. Of course, this doesn’t save the Team, his friends, and his baby momma as Prometheus kills himself, setting off hundreds of bombs on the island’s surface! So who survived this mess? Read on…

ARROW Season 5×23, “Lian Yu” recap

25 May

Welcome back, Arrowheads! It’s season finale time, and last time we were all here, we got quite a setup.  Ollie was put in the unenviable position to free our season’s big bad, Adrian Chase, when Adrian’s associates kidnapped all of Team Arrow, even his hidden son!  Discovering Adrian had made his way to Lian Yu to setup some final confrontation between the two, Ollie knew he had to get some help, and enlisted Malcolm Merlyn and Nyssa al Ghul.  But once they all got to the island, he still had to get one more hand to help him in this fight: the imprisoned Deathstroke/Slade Wilson!  How will this wobbly team-up going to fare against all those bad guys?  Well, before we get to the shocking result, let’s check in on another ticking clock… Continue reading

ARROW Season 5×22, “Missing” recap

18 May

Welcome back, Arrowheads!  We’re on the tail end of the season, and it seems we are going out on a good note.  The big bad of the season, Adrian Chase, has been captured and imprisoned, which I’m sure is a relief to everyone in Team Arrow.  So I guess there’s no big city ending threat this season and the next two episodes is gonna be the gang just kicking back and enjoying some quiet time catching up with their favorite books or TV shows.

Yeah, I didn’t think that either, especially after seeing that grin on Adrian in his jail cell.  So let’s see what’s in store now for the Team…in a minute… Continue reading

ARROW Season 5×21, “Honor Thy Fathers” recap

11 May

Welcome back, Arrowheads!  When last we left Team Arrow, they had some problems with their HQ that had to be addressed, namely Adrian locking it down and trapping Ollie and Felicity inside of it!  After that got taken care of, they still have to find our big bad of the season, and hopefully sooner than later, if Adrian’s visit to Ollie’s hidden son isn’t enough of a hint.  But first… Continue reading

Some thoughts on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2!

9 May

Stewart here…

(Major SPOILERS coming up, but first, some less spoiler-ish thoughts…)

Marking the second movie in a month where Vin Diesel is in it, as well as Kurt Russell, and with the big subject of “family”, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has finally arrived!  The first movie was a surprise to lot of filmgoers and critics who didn’t know from early previews what to make of this bizarre comic book sci-fi action movie, and with its equally shocking success, it seemed inevitable a sequel would be coming our way.  Written and directed again by James Gunn, was this sequel going to live up to the original?  The short answer is: yes.  The longer answer is: well, keep reading… Continue reading

ARROW Season 5×20, “Underneath” recap

4 May

Welcome back, Arrowheads!  When last we left Team Arrow, they were still on the hunt for creepy ‘ol Prometheus, but they had some distractions of late.  The big one being Felicity’s involvement with HELIX causing some friction between her and Ollie, and by happenstance, Diggle and Lyla over ARGUS’ recent activities.  But it’s the former couple we need to discuss, because as Felicity’s using the special tracer she got from HELIX to find Adrian Chase, her and Ollie are caught an explosion inside the HQ!  Did they survive?  Well, YES obviously, but let’s see how… Continue reading

ARROW Season 5×19, “Dangerous Liaisons” recap

27 Apr

Welcome back, Arrowheads!  Now that Adrian Chase has been revealed to be Prometheus, things should be better for Team Arrow, yeah?  Well, there’s still the tiny problem that Adrian has fleed his witness protection detail, and no one knows where he is.  Then there’s Felicity becoming more chummy with the hacker collective HELIX, and that can only explode in her and her friends’ face.  On the plus side, no flashbacks this week, so we can get straight to this… Continue reading

ARROW Season 5×18, “Disbanded” recap

30 Mar

Welcome back, Arrowheads!  Previously, Ollie found himself prisoner of Adrian Chase/Prometheus, and got a lesson as to what kind of man he is, specifically a guy who probably enjoys murdering bad guys.  This educational experience really messed with Ollie’s head, so much so that when he was let go by Adrian, he immediately went back to Arrow HQ to tell the Team he’s shutting down the operation.  Sure, Ollie has had his little periods of wanting to pack this Green Arrow thing up, but this ordeal seems to have snapped ol’ Oliver Queen.  What does this mean for taking down Adrian? Continue reading

ARROW Season 5×17, “Kapiushon” recap

23 Mar

Welcome back, Arrowheads!  Oliver Queen finally knows his nemesis this season, Prometheus, is his District Attorney, Adrian Chase!  Considering he’s turned his mentor (Talia al Ghul) and a recruit into Team Arrow (Evelyn Sharp) against Ollie, it only makes sense that sooner or later the stakes would be raised.  After killing his own wife, Adrian takes Ollie hostage, with plans to break the man.  Can the rest of Team Arrow get to their leader in time?  More importantly, what is Adrian’s scheme in not killing Ollie?   Continue reading
