It seems like Syfy is going all in with spaceship based drama this year, with Dark Matter and Killjoys earlier this year, but those were appetizers for December’s The Expanse. Based on the book series by James S.A. Corey (a pseudonym for the two writers of the books, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), this show was one I was really looking for to, as I recently started reading the books for myself. But considering Syfy has been keeping its stable of shows relatively Earthbound, how would this sparring saga fare when translated to television? If the first episode (now available on cable on demand and YouTube ahead of its mid-December premiere) is any indication, Sci-Fi TV fans are in for a great meal.

So I’ve been starved for space ship-bound Sci-Fi shows pretty much since Stargate Universe went off the air, and it looks like we’re about to get a good amount of them on Syfy this year. There’s The Expanse which is coming out later this year (based on the really good book series), and now there’s two imports from Canada, Dark Matter and Killjoys that are now on Friday nights. So here’s a brief review of both so far:

Besides watching the new season of Banshee (a show clearly less “Nerdsquee” and more “WTFF?” territory), my Friday night TV watching is generally light. And with the recent news of the new season of Hannibal premiering in the summer (!), its going to be more so during the spring. Following my recent Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. marathon, I marathoned Arrow– which as you know, is a favorite here at NerdLush. And my adoration for Paul Blackthorne was awakened… additionally, he has been super awesome to NerdLush on twitter, which warms the black pits of my hearts. Of course, this means that I pulled out a favorite single season television series- The Dresden Files.
In 2000, Jim Butcher introduced the character of Harry Dresden in the novel, “Storm Front”. The character, a wizard P.I., is a consultant to the Chicago Police Department- think Sam Spade but add magic. There are now over a dozen novels in print.
Once again, I’m late to the party. Sometimes it really sucks to be a poor grad student with no TV, but then I remember NetFlix and Hulu and that everything I want to see will eventually be available there. Last year I finally checked out Eureka and Primeval (and it’s spinoff). So this year, during my recent enforced rest due to injury, I finally started watching Syfy’s Haven.
I’ve zipped through the available four seasons like I was marathoning an old favorite! Continue reading
Due to a last minute ticket, my brother and I are off to SDCC 2013 this week. I posted before about our previous adventures. Hopefully, we’ll have someone here at the site who can do daily wrap-ups (last year, Stewart did a great job. Think he’s up for it this year?).
I have no specific thing that we are going to see… though my brother is putting together a schedule. There are many friends there, though. We’ll definitely spend time in the big room and try to get into Ballroom 20 for some TV panels. And I have an idea for a few posts I’d like to put together. But… is there anything specific YOU’D like me get info on?
I will say that I’m super excited about no Twilight fans this year…
Alright… I’m back to talk “Girl Power”. Or… um… wait, I’m actually here to talk about a sci-fi “gem” from the early 2000’s that I passed on originally. Probably for good reason. But having recently sat to watch the entire thing- well, let’s just say I think it’s one that if you haven’t seen, you should. Probably.
The problem is- I can’t decide if I actually like the show or not. But that’s neither here nor there at the moment… let’s first talk about the show. Welcome to Dark Angel.

Tomorrow night, Syfy channel has the US premiere of Primeval: New World. Not gonna lie, I’m pretty excited. Finally my friends can see what I saw months ago.
