NerdLush writing experiment

25 Apr

Due to a double post day on Wednesday, there’s nothing ready to run today. I know… bad form. I could let it go and just skip the day, but I would prefer to run something. Personally, I’m working on my next piece looking at the psychology of characters, but it won’t be ready for a bit. And there’s a guest piece in the works on my recent panel at WonderCon (along with video of the panel), but again… not ready to run today. Here is a link to The Mary Sue review of the panel, in case you haven’t seen it. I’m kind of excited to be mentioned in The Mary Sue.

Anyways… I think there is also a post about a sweet little kickstarter that may be running soon, but we’re waiting on the info about the project from the creators. Possibly some other guest posts, too. Along with the usual- Smallville recaps, Arrow write-ups, and other semi-regular posts around here. But today… I’ve got nothing. Continue reading

Did you know?

19 Jan

OK, I’m going to be really honest… wordpress just ate the post I’ve been working on for the last two hours. So while I go cry in my spiked coffee, I need to post something! So here are two playlists that you may or may not know about. Continue reading

San Diego Comic-con- I survived Con Crud!

2 Aug

This is probably the last significant post we’ll do about SDCC 2013, but I wanted to do a personal round up of my time there. Last year’s post still gets regular hits, so for some reason this sort of thing is of interest.

NerdLush Asks~ Let’s Make a Movie with Kirsten Vangsness

21 Jun

If you’re new, you won’t know this about me so I’ll just spell it out for you- I love helping independent art get created. I also love movies. And TV, but that’s not important right now. What is important is that today’s NerdLush Asks is devoted to an independent film. Well… and some TV and geek speak. But that’s par for the course around here, right?

Well let’s dig in- Film Noir refers to a period or style of film, that portrayed a “darkness and cynicism that was not seen before“. A harsh view of reality and a disillusionment that was felt by the American people following World War II colored the medium; rejecting the happy go lucky style of propaganda previously produced during this period. Interestingly, though the style has decreased immensely over the years, several modern films fit- Blade Runner being one of the stand-outs along with L.A. Confidential (a more obvious choice to fit the category).

Kill Me, Deadly

Kill Me, Deadly

I am by no means an expert on film or genre- I like what I like. And I like Noir films. There is something beautiful about the simplicity of films from the 1940’s, but the grittiness of Noir films… stunning.

Kirsten VangsnessSo why is this a topic of discussion today? Because one of my favorite actresses is currently creating, producing, starring in, and presenting for funding help a piece of noir. Well, actually it’s a noir spoof. Which, honestly, makes me want to see it even more. I had the opportunity to chat with Kirsten Vangsness (best known for her role on Criminal Minds) about the kickstarter campaign for Kill Me, Deadly. Continue reading

When my worlds collide- the creation of crazy in a character

17 Feb

For years, I’ve been curious — what does a script actually say when it calls for a character to be crazy? I know it seems like a weird thing to wonder, but not if you really know me. I have degrees in Psychology and the focus of my research, work, education, and life is a severely dysfunctional population.

Old Adventures… Salute to Supernatural 2007

6 Sep

While living in Chicago for a short time, I didn’t get out and do as many nerdy things as I’d liked- I’ve actually done more nerdy things in Chicago since I moved back to California! But one of the things I did do was head out to the Creation Con Supernatural event in 2007. At the time, I’d never seen Supernatural (I was working on my masters, had only public TV, and was very sheltered due to being a California kid living in a city that actually had WEATHER!) so I opted to go to the con for two reasons- two guests that I adored and a few friends from around the state were heading in for it. However, I came out of the weekend with a love for Jared and Jensen (damn them for being awesome) and a need to watch the show. Continue reading
