Out of Limitations Comes Creativity ~ Debbie Allen; or… how media has changed and the triumphs & pitfalls of independent fundraising

12 Jun

An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail. ~ Edwin Land

Some time ago, technology changed and made it so that anyone with a dream and some talent could make a movie- OK, the talent wasn’t always there, but it was if you wanted your work to actually be seen. The technology was readily available, at almost realistic for the average Joe prices, and the ability to get your work out to the masses was relatively simple. Of course, there was still a cost to it, so most people just made simple home movies to share with friends and family about their childs first steps or their wedding or what have you. It was better than the slide presentations my dad used to give, but just barely. Continue reading

Get Ready To Lick That Lollipop

11 Jun

So, I may be missing the release party tonight (I have a fear of being trapped in enclosed spaces with gamer nerds by myself and no one seemed available to go at the last minute) but I cannot wait to get my copy of James Gunn’s Lollipop Chainsaw. You’ve seen the trailers, right? Cuz if you have, I know that you are like me and eagerly awaiting your chance to hack up some zombies with the decapitated smartass head of your boyfriend (who happens to be voiced by the delectable Michael Rosenbaum~ it’s probably a good thing I’m not going… I may be just tired enough to do the giddy schoolgirl thing in front of him). NerdLush asks… well not really…

8 Jun

More like, NerdLush got asked. Our friend, Natasha- who you might remember from the author interview last month– asked “@NerdLushDiva I want to hear all about Jellyfish Vs Betta Fish. Write it from the point of view of Bishop Tutu (still love that name!)” via twitter. And since I’m drawing a blank for topics today- I’ll answer. Continue reading

My Inner Nerd is a Theatre Nerd. But Not a Snobby One.

4 Jun

It’s not really a secret that I am a theatre nerd. I was pretty much raised to be one. My mother made sure we had season tickets to the local amateur theatre company by the time I was five. I even ended up working for the company throughout my teenage years (I was a backstage tech, but the experience taught me a lot about life). I even went to a performing arts high school where I focused on theatre. Sadly, as I went out into the world as an adult, attending theatrical productions has been one of the things that has suffered- it’s generally too expensive. I made it to maybe 3 things while I lived in Chicago- a fact that deeply saddened me (though the things I made it to were well worth the effort). I vowed to make it a possibility to see theatre productions when I moved to L.A. So far, I’ve managed to quick that vow.  Continue reading

Captains Vlog~ Nerd Adventures~ Episode 1, Vasquez Rocks

31 May

What is truly fun in life is having a friend who will geek out with you. I’m on break between semesters, so currently I have even more free time than normal; Emily is on hiatus between gigs, so has a large amount of free time as well. Take the two of us, our immense free time (and lack of money), and multiply by the number of sheer unadulterated geeky things we can come up with… you have a lot of Nerd Adventures to look forward to. Femme Fatales Premiere Coverage… OMG! James Gunn!

23 May

You may recall that last week AFC ran my interview with several of the ladies from Cinemax’s Femme Fatales– as a capper to that interview I was asked to cover the season two premiere. The write-up for that is up on AFC. This would be my first on-site press gig as the interviewer (remember, for Spartacus, I took the photos) and would also be attending the screening and after-party… so I tracked down someone to be my assistant for this event- my friend Phil Xenidis (you might know him better as rock god, Phil X formerly of Powder, currently playing with his band The Drills and with so many other awesome artists). As I laughed with a mutual friend the other day- last year, he was playing with Bon Jovi, now he’s my bitch. Ha! But in all seriousness- I have to give Phil a lot of love for his help. He took some great photos for me and it was great to have a friend to hang out with. Continue reading

FanGirl Squee… Convention season is upon us!

19 May

Alright… the season isn’t really a season anymore as there are great conventions throughout the year and all over the country, but back in the day starting with Easter and running through Labor Day, it was convention season.  Continue reading
