This is probably the last significant post we’ll do about SDCC 2013, but I wanted to do a personal round up of my time there. Last year’s post still gets regular hits, so for some reason this sort of thing is of interest.
San Diego Comic-con 2013- Joss Whedon
23 JulOne of my favorite panels is the Joss Q&A. If my brother and I make it to the con, this panel is high up on our list. It’s not the best video as my camera died right before and I had to switch and we sat in the back of ballroom 20, but… it is complete (minus 1 question in the middle) and is a lot of fun. If you’ve never had the opportunity to listen to Joss… enjoy! Continue reading
NerdLush Asks~ Let’s Make a Movie with Kirsten Vangsness
21 JunIf you’re new, you won’t know this about me so I’ll just spell it out for you- I love helping independent art get created. I also love movies. And TV, but that’s not important right now. What is important is that today’s NerdLush Asks is devoted to an independent film. Well… and some TV and geek speak. But that’s par for the course around here, right?
Well let’s dig in- Film Noir refers to a period or style of film, that portrayed a “darkness and cynicism that was not seen before“. A harsh view of reality and a disillusionment that was felt by the American people following World War II colored the medium; rejecting the happy go lucky style of propaganda previously produced during this period. Interestingly, though the style has decreased immensely over the years, several modern films fit- Blade Runner being one of the stand-outs along with L.A. Confidential (a more obvious choice to fit the category).
I am by no means an expert on film or genre- I like what I like. And I like Noir films. There is something beautiful about the simplicity of films from the 1940’s, but the grittiness of Noir films… stunning.
So why is this a topic of discussion today? Because one of my favorite actresses is currently creating, producing, starring in, and presenting for funding help a piece of noir. Well, actually it’s a noir spoof. Which, honestly, makes me want to see it even more. I had the opportunity to chat with Kirsten Vangsness (best known for her role on Criminal Minds) about the kickstarter campaign for Kill Me, Deadly. Continue reading
The Four Letter Word in Sci-Fi Shows: Cancelled
11 FebIt’s that awful moment during November sweeps, or during summer, refreshing your internet feed on twitter and tumblr when you see it- your favorite show has been CANCELED. Saddened and dismayed you take to the internet, posting comments and signing petitions, uploading rants about networks and their executives to YouTube After a few days, sometimes a few weeks in rare occasion, the average person moves on to another show, another fandom. Still, there are always shows that linger in people’s thoughts years after cancellation with fans always hoping that somehow the show will find a resurrection, as Firefly found with Serenity (although lets be honest, most of us would back a Kickstarter campaign to bring the show back in any form), Futurama found with another network, and of course the resurrection of Doctor Who in 2005, now one of the most popular shows in both Britain and the USA.

When worlds collide…
27 NovAs I was sitting at my moms this past weekend, watching the NCIS marathon on USA (as one would…), I was occasionally flipping over to Twitter to get the latest info (it’s better than wasting time trying to get info from online news sites) and discovered that Wil Wheaton was spending the afternoon cleaning out or going through old boxes in his garage. Old Adventures… Salute to Supernatural 2007
6 SepWhile living in Chicago for a short time, I didn’t get out and do as many nerdy things as I’d liked- I’ve actually done more nerdy things in Chicago since I moved back to California! But one of the things I did do was head out to the Creation Con Supernatural event in 2007. At the time, I’d never seen Supernatural (I was working on my masters, had only public TV, and was very sheltered due to being a California kid living in a city that actually had WEATHER!) so I opted to go to the con for two reasons- two guests that I adored and a few friends from around the state were heading in for it. However, I came out of the weekend with a love for Jared and Jensen (damn them for being awesome) and a need to watch the show. Continue reading
