Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ward… do we love him? Yes, we do.

26 Jul

At the end of season 1 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Char and I were working on a post about why we loved Agent Ward. Even though he was with Hydra and evil. Life happened, the finale aired, and we never finished it.

But it has lingered in the back of my mind ever since.

Ward is evil. He is Hydra. But we still love him. Below is an excerpt from the discussion we had regarding Agent Ward. Continue reading

Television Graveyard- plot 9, SeaQuest DSV

20 Jul

Things were different back in the 90s…

Sunday night television was actually appropriate for families. Shows didn’t aim to outdo each other by hitting extremes of violence, sex, language or gore. It was a different time.

Kids, in the fall of 1993, NBC  premiered a sci-fi series from Steven Spielberg set in the near-ish future where the world was mostly at peace, and man had set out to explore a new frontier… the oceans.

Who are YOU really?

16 Jul

Have you ever watched a movie/TV show and flipped out because you are so used to seeing that actor as another character? For instance, Princess Diaries 2 pits Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) against Smallville‘s Major Zod (Callum Blue) for the hand of Catwoman (Anne Hathaway). It’s just weird.

I saw a meme a few months ago that hits home with this idea- Continue reading

Light & Dark… Black & White… Good & Bad… who would you rather be?

20 Jun

Last year I wanted to learn more about creating “crazy” characters and utilized social media to reach out to actors, writers, and creators in order to learn the different perspectives. As a mental health professional, I have found that I lose a bit when I watch something as I tend to sit and observe the characters- looking to diagnose, to see their flaws, to learn who they are, etc. Usually I can turn it off and focus on the story but sometimes it is harder than others. Especially after a long day with clients.

A change in character

Batfleck by Steve Scott

Batfleck by Steve Scott

If you don’t know, several weeks ago Fox announced the new line-up for the Fantastic Four reboot and it got people talking. A lot. Not in the same way people talked about Ben Affleck being cast as the next Bruce Wayne/Batman, this had nothing to do with the actors credentials, it was because the actor in question is black. The Wonderousness of WonderCon 2014… or how Easter Weekend is going to need a week to recover from

21 Apr

The con season is off to a brilliant start and NerdLush spent this Easter weekend in sunny Anaheim wandering the halls of WonderCon for the third year. Three significant differences from the prior years- a) rather than just going for Sunday, we went for all 3 days, b) rather than being only at the hall and otherwise being at home- we had a hotel room, and c) instead of just being fans, press, or otherwise wandering around innocently, I had been asked to be part of a panel on “The Psychology of Cult TV”. The latter piece will be covered in a separate post because honestly, I don’t remember much of it- my first panel… I was nervous! BUT! I have been told it (and I) was very good. And it felt pretty awesome. Continue reading

Hunting the Wild Barrowman

15 Apr

One would think that this mission- a picture with John Barrowman- would not be a difficult task, but this is a mission 5 years in the making! But in order to tell the story, I have to start at the beginning-

Captain-Jack-Harkness-John-barrowman-and-David-Tennant-doctor-who-34840887-600-480In the fall of 2006, I had uprooted myself from sunny California to the great city of Chicago in order to complete a masters degree. Through the social networking and fandoms at the time, I was blessed with friends all over the world- but none in Chicago. The closest people I knew were relatives in Wisconsin (who I didn’t really know) and a dear friend at the southern end of Illinois. So… as I waited for classes to start and semi wandered the city to acclimate myself, I also dug into shows and movies that I had missed. One such was the 2005 Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston. Now I remember watching DW as a kid on PBS (though I couldn’t tell you who my first Doctor was) and I know I watched the 1996 telefilm on FOX with the 8th Doctor, but I really didn’t know much about the series. Why I adore Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

8 Mar

It’s no secret that I am a fan of all things Whedon and Marvel, nor is it a secret that when I saw the pilot ep for S.H.I.E.L.D. at San Diego Comic Con 2013 I may have squee’d like a crazy puppy (ask my brother). But like others, I drifted over the next few episodes after the premiere last fall. I mean… I was still in for the season, but I didn’t feel the energy that I felt with the pilot.

Did you know?

19 Jan

OK, I’m going to be really honest… wordpress just ate the post I’ve been working on for the last two hours. So while I go cry in my spiked coffee, I need to post something! So here are two playlists that you may or may not know about. Continue reading

Highlights of 2013, a NerdLush year in review

13 Jan

Many thanks to Emily for starting the year off with a drunk year in review. Made me laugh. But I’m poking my head in now with a slightly more serious look back at 2013 and where it took NerdLush. As well as some of the favorites, as voted on by fans. Continue reading
