Community, no not the TV Show.

9 Feb

Guest post by Lee Daniels.
************************************************************

I thought long and hard for a few days of what to write for my first blog post, after all there’s so much going on right now with Marvel, Star Wars and every Mark Millar comic being turned into a movie, it makes choosing a subject a lot easier with such a huge pool to pick from.

But I wanted to write something that means a lot to me and that most likely means a lot to you to.

The geek community. Continue reading

NerdLush celebrates… Alright fine, we just like parties.

1 Feb

The one year anniversary of NerdLush is coming! On March 19th, this little site will have been trucking along for a full year! And we want to celebrate! Alright, ya caught me- we just like parties.

But it’s true, we want to celebrate with our fans and friends the success of our little site. Unfortunately… March went and filled up on us before we were able to get stuff in motion! So… we’ve got our shindig scheduled for April 6th… a few weeks late, but who cares! It’s a party. Plus, this date allows us to also celebrate the spring birthdays of some of the crew. Epic party!

We’re planning a theme this time… currently debating between two ideas- both are beholden to the imagination of the guest. So help us out and vote for one in our poll!

Want to come to the party? It’s invite only but we want you there! Drop us a line at NerdLush@gmail.com and we’ll get you the details!

An Apology for Not Discovering SHERLOCK Until Right Now

19 Dec

I like to believe I’m good at catching on to shows that are really good earlier than most people in general do.  I was a staunch supporter of shows like Battlestar Galactica, Sons of Anarchy, and Breaking Bad, for example, long before they entered the pop culture conversation.  But even saying that, I have to confess because of time and other constraints, I’m often late to the party in many shows.  I didn’t get into Supernatural until someone after its fifth season, Mad Men only sporadically interested me, and let’s not talk about my lack of interest in watching Smallville (even though I love Superman). National Novel Writing Month Diary 2012

1 Dec

The following are two posts I had written for a summary of my work this November on National Novel Writing Month.

The premise, as its been for the last few years, is to promote fledging and wannabe writers by giving them a challenge: write an original book made up of 50,000 words within the month of November  Thirty days, 50,000 words at the minimum to do.  you sign up at their website (nanowrimo.org), and they provide you with advice, word count average you should make per day, and a graph of what your word count is for each day you log it online.  You then can have your novel checked a few days before the end of the month to see if you got up to 50k in words.  The reward for participating is not some cash prize, but its an exercise to build up your ability to write if that’s what you’re interested in doing.  Plus, you now have a working draft of a full length novel (if you’re lucky) as a result, so in away, you’ve already won. Nerd Party For the Mother Effing Win!

2 Oct

So… a wee bit ago, we at NerdLush celebrated six months of nerdery with a costumed karaoke party with friends and fans. I admit to being a wee bit nervous before the event… I mean, this is LA! People RSVP for things here all the time (and then don’t show up!) (or the opposite-show up without an RSVP). And up til the actual party night- after arriving at the venue- there was that little whisper saying I should be ready with “It’s my party, I’ll cry if I want to”… but then… everyone (plus more awesome people) showed up. And sang. And had costumes. And laughed. And had fun. And it was AWESOME.

The only thing that made me sad is that Stewart wasn’t able to be there with us. 😦 Continue reading

Out of the chaos, we emerge exhausted & broke, but having had a good time with great experiences, we arrive home satisfied. Here’s how it played out:

Nerd Adventures ~ Aquarium of the Pacific

10 Sep

I love Jellyfish. And Penguins. And Sharks. And well… pretty much everything you can and do find at aquariums.

Generally, I go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium because its close to my hometown- we got there on field trips as kids. I visited my brother once when he lived in Baltimore and he used it as an excuse to go to their aquarium. And when I lived in Chicago- visiting friends gave me the same excuse. Heck, even last year visiting Kathleen in Seattle led to a visit to an aquarium! So… I think it’s clear that I like undersea things. Continue reading

Old Adventures… Salute to Supernatural 2007

6 Sep

While living in Chicago for a short time, I didn’t get out and do as many nerdy things as I’d liked- I’ve actually done more nerdy things in Chicago since I moved back to California! But one of the things I did do was head out to the Creation Con Supernatural event in 2007. At the time, I’d never seen Supernatural (I was working on my masters, had only public TV, and was very sheltered due to being a California kid living in a city that actually had WEATHER!) so I opted to go to the con for two reasons- two guests that I adored and a few friends from around the state were heading in for it. However, I came out of the weekend with a love for Jared and Jensen (damn them for being awesome) and a need to watch the show. Continue reading
