Before Avengers: Endgame was released, I was talking to a friend about it and how excited I was to see it. He was excited, too. Well, I can only assume you have managed over the weekend to see the biggest thing of the summer so far (or maybe THE biggest thing of the summer), by somehow seeing Avengers: Endgame. If you have, I’ll be here to talk about the key points, call backs, and poignant deaths of this three hour epic film. If you haven’t yet, you should go ahead and do that now (it’s not like you’ll be hurting to find it at your local multiplex), because this be full of SPOILERS. So if you haven’t, come back later. Guest Post~ Second Hand Nerd

I am a second hand nerd.
I deliberately exposed my two kids (now adults) to comic books, science fiction on TV and in the movies as well as at the library, conventions (comic book and/or sci-fi) , made them super-hero capes and sometimes even discussed what would have happened if Leia and Luke weren’t brother and sister (eww, gross Mom) or if Leia had been the one trained by Obi Wan Kenobi.
At the time I thought I was keeping them entertained. I certainly did not expect it to effect the rest of their lives. I assumed they would outgrow their super heroes and Star Wars action figures.
They didn’t.
They play Pokemon. They’re sort of competitive and sort of cooperative. They have fun going on ”raids” or whatever they’re called. (Mind you they are grown adults with jobs.) They go to action movies and drag/take me along. Sunday of opening week. And my daughter, the proud keeper of this blog, takes me to cons where I get kissed by TV villains.
And then there are their T-shirts. Many of which I bought them. I need say no more as anyone who reads this blog has a closet full, too.
To top it all off they’re nice people. They work hard and take care of homes and pets and breakable mothers and are polite, up to date on the state of the world, altogether “normal”. Except that they still go to cons, collect comics (not so much since the flurry of re-boots.), actively discuss tv shows, upcoming DC and Marvel films and Pokemon daily. And they include me. I’m actually supposed to have an opinion. It’s wrong, of course, but they do listen to it first.
And I enjoy it. I protest , as a responsible adult should, that collecting bobble heads, spending Saturdays hunting made up monsters/creatures and passionately debating the characterization of Shazam vs. whoever is not worthy of them. Again, I’m wrong. I led them up this path and it gives them pleasure. They adult perfectly well so why not?
As for their including me, thank you. Our relationship has changed from parent to friend and I am so lucky.
A Marvel’s AGENTS OF SHIELD Primer: 20 Essential Episodes

It’s hard to believe that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has managed to survive five seasons, let alone be renewed for a seventh one months (!) before the sixth is to be released. It was meant to be adjacent to all the big goings on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but without a heavy link to them (save a cameo or two from Nick Fury early on), it seemed a slave to whenever those big events in the movies happened. That was true of the first season (and we’ll get into that soon enough), but as the show continued and became less motivated by the movies, it became a better series for it. And now 110 episodes later, it’s somehow managed to survive fluctuating ratings and schedules, and with barely an end visible for now.
The setup in a nutshell: we follow SHIELD agent Phil Coulson (and since this is after The Avengers movie, it’s strange because he DIED in that movie) as he puts together a team of agents to deal with the growing superhuman threats across the world. That team consists of field agents Grant Ward, Melinda May, scientists Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons (FitzSimmons, respectively), and newcomer Daisy Johnson, and they all have their own respective baggage with them. As the show moved on, their ranks grew and shrunk, they dealt with betrayal between themselves and from SHIELD itself, and occasionally dealt with threats not just superhuman, but alien and supernatural. Hell, they even went to space. Some of the team more than once.
So, in order to help you get caught up before the sixth season premieres sometime in the summer, here’s a list of 20 of its best and pivotal episodes from all five seasons that are worth watching. There are mild SPOILERS, but the summaries are kept vague as possible to avoid revealing some of the surprises in store.
Heroes and Villains invaded San Jose for another year of adventuring!
10 DecFor our 3rd year, we ventured over the hill from the Central Valley to hang out with some heroes and villains, and zombies too!, in San Jose. This was sort of a last minute venture due to availability issues with minions, but in the end we made plans and set out to see what there was to see.
As I write up the event and my thoughts, I am starting to think there should be classes on convention etiquette because there were several moments that were frustrating. However, there were also a lot of really good things. Did it balance out? I’m not sure… let’s talk about some of the highlights and issues and see. Continue reading
