Mars is easily my favorite planet. In middle school, in order to get into the super fancy engineering academy high school, I wrote an essay about how much I wanted to be the first woman on Mars. And I have evey intention of one day taking a vacation to Mars (probably when I’m elevendy.) So, with that being said…

24 JulEh, this is a short one to share- if you haven’t already seen- that my SDCC post written for Action Chick went up recently- wherein I lament the lines, avoid Con Crud, and share what it’s like to attend (for those who’ve never been). Not much else to share in regards to this… I think that this finishes up the SDCC craziness for another year and thus you may now return to regularly scheduled lives. On The Road Again… SDCC 2012 Here We Come!
10 JulThis time tomorrow I will be on the freeway heading from LA to San Diego in the annual Nerd Pilgrimage. I missed San Diego Comic-Con last year so I am super excited to be attending this year. I usually attend, with my brother (see here and here for explanations as to why), on behalf of Evil Squirrel Comics in Chicago. I love ESC- it’s my home away from home. This year, however, James and I have a new boss and shall be working for my other home away from home- Action Flick Chick. In the last few weeks, it’s been fun getting an idea of who we may end up talking to for AFC. 8 JulRecently, I accepted a mission from the Action Chick herself (really… who wouldn’t?) to interview Tara Platt & Yuri Lowenthal, the masterminds behind the webseries, Shelf Life. Of course, I had not heard of the show prior to this so I ran over to youtube to catch up. Which was helpful when I started working out questions- special thanks to Stewart for his suggestions, too! But as a psychologist, I’m a big fan of random questions- I find that you can learn a lot about someone with a bit of randomness. If anything can be learned from time travel stories, its that meddling with the past can have unintended consequences. One of the best examples of this is the now late Ray Bradbury’s classic short story A Sound of Thunder, where a simple bug being crushed changes the entire course of human history. With all the infinite possibilities for disaster the notion of going back to the past presents, you would think such an idea would not be cavalierly pursued. The concept of writer/artist Jonathan Hickman’s time travel world-building epic Pax Romana is that even with a unified purpose, things still can change in a surprising way. Continue reading

And now zombies- OK, maybe we aren’t attracted to zombies, but we are drawn to them (and no, please don’t start a conversation about bath salts here). And werewolves- OK, technically not undead but… OMG! what draws us to these creatures of the supernatural?

Slicing & Dicing Zombies Is Best When Spending Romantic Time With A Decapitated Head
18 JunSo… my copy of Lollipop Chainsaw arrived. And I am happily ignoring a quiz in my family violence class in order to rev my chainsaw and hack up some living dead. I haven’t had this much fun playing a game in years- a fact that probably says a lot about why I am not a gamer. I think the only thing that makes me sad is that it isn’t a 2-player game, as I think it’d be cool to hack some zombies with the rest of “Juliet’s” family. Of course, I’m pretty happy with the smart-ass comments from the decapitated head of her boyfriend- so I’m good. 
Though… I’m glad he’s just a head- if he had a stomach, I think “Nick” would be pretty nauseated since his head is chained to “Juliet’s” belt and she’s spinning around, kicking the shit out of the zombie horde. Be a little problematic if she had to stop every now and then so he could hurl.

Some time ago, technology changed and made it so that anyone with a dream and some talent could make a movie- OK, the talent wasn’t always there, but it was if you wanted your work to actually be seen. The technology was readily available, at almost realistic for the average Joe prices, and the ability to get your work out to the masses was relatively simple. Of course, there was still a cost to it, so most people just made simple home movies to share with friends and family about their childs first steps or their wedding or what have you. It was better than the slide presentations my dad used to give, but just barely. Continue reading
