Ruining a Genre: Popularity of Twilight and Hunger Games

6 May

Life isn’t perfect, in fact often it is quite the opposite. Despite the efforts we make day in and day out, not everything goes our way. That is what makes dystopian novels and movies so intriguing and interesting. Its our world, but slightly off. It gives the possibility of ‘what if.’ Usually it’s something like a war, or sickness, or government battle that changes the world, but it is also something feasible, and that is why it is terrifying. SMALLVILLE Minicaps / Season 1, Eps. 1-4

The beginning of the Smallville minicaps! No need to start singing the theme music…

A brief introduction: I’ve always been a Superman fan.  Yeah, he was a Boy Scout in tights, but he was also one of the more interesting characters in comic-dom to me.  You got the immigrant boy who is sent to a land foreign to him, who then grows up with values and moral decency to become that strange land’s hero.  Kind of inspiring to read something like that, and if that college-esque dissection didn’t do that for you, there’s the thrill of seeing someone fly and fight bad guys. Guilty Pleasures- To Sin With TV

30 Apr

I’ve had a lot going on of late, so it’s been difficult to work my way through it all in order to write a post. Apologies. Thankfully, my favorite minion has been on the ball! But I’m pulling it together today in order to start new series of posts- Guilty Pleasures. Like the title says, these are things that I love and adore, but I feel a little guilty for enjoying it. I obviously have a lot of these- you already know of my love for the bad movie but here are some more.

Actually, to ease into it… I’m just going to talk about the TV series from this last season that I consider my guilty pleasures. Continue reading

Garrus Vakarian is my Wingman — Why I Still Love Mass Effect, Part 2

28 Apr

Stewart here… and some spoilers follow in case you asked…

In this installment, I really want to start by taking the time to focus on the squadmates, and if you’re good about it, friends in the Mass Effect series.  In this case, just to keep things light, I’ll focus on your squadmates from the first game.  Everyone’s got their favorites they want with them on every mission, and I know I feel the same way.  Sure I’ll shift them around in necessity of missions, but there are the “go to” squadmates every player of Mass Effect has.  The only downside of the whole thing is the greedy part of me that wants to take more than two for my squad.

So, in no particular order, here are my thoughts on your team from the first Mass Effect (with some spoilers as to the whole trilogy): Continue reading

Nerd Adventure! Renaissance Pleasure Faire!!

26 Apr

Recently, Emily and I made our way to Irwindale to attend the annual Renaissance Pleasure Faire. The faire runs from early April through mid-May. We went together in 2012 and while we had fun, the heat was such that we both got sunburnt and were grumpy by the time we got home afterwards. We planned better this year and arrived at the faire a little after 2pm and stayed til almost closing. This allowed us to arrive at the height of the heat but remain as the sun dropped and the heat lessened. Also, there was a fire in the hills near by, so as a bonus we got to enjoy watching a fire rescue chopper take water from the reservoir. The other attendees and participants at the faire kept calling it a dragon- it was both cute and weird. Continue reading

Takin’ it to the limit (with the Farscape minicaps) one more time…

Stewart here…and fair warning, some spoilers lie within…

Greetings fellow travelers of the Uncharted Territories, to the final (for the foreseeable future) mini-cap of Farscape.  So, after a multitude of factors (like ratings), some of which couldn’t be seen coming (like lack of money), Farscape left the airwaves after four seasons.  But loyal fans wanted to see the show come back (or at least get wrapped up properly), and their wishes got answered a year later, with the announcement of a miniseries in The Peacekeeper Wars.  Its one of the rare occasions where the fans were able to drum up the need for more of what they want after the supposed death bell rang. Should I Stay or Should I Go? — When Genre Shows Need to Stop

20 Apr

Stewart here…

Every television show has to end.  There is no way to really avoid that for many loyal fans, but like many of those fans, I wonder when that time comes, is it too soon or too late.   Keeping a show fresh and enjoyable for seasons is no easy task, but with changes in cast and crew, sometimes that task becomes harder to accomplish.  Sometimes a show should know, in the immortal words of Kenny Rogers, “when to hold ‘em”, and “when to fold ‘em”. My Fear of the Uber Fan

Today I need to share about my fear of Uber Fans.
