The Great Trek Debate- Chapter 4, Romance in the Stars

1 Mar

Ok, so I’ve been trying to figure out what the next chapter will be in this ongoing series and I was inspired by a recent holiday themed post I read. That post listed 10 of the best romances in Star Trek, but when I read it… I didn’t agree. So I’ve put some thought into it and created my own list- though in no particular order as it depends on the day and my mood… Continue reading

Creature Features are good for the soul.

25 Feb

Throughout my recent bout of the plague, and to be honest whenever I feel the need for a pick me up, I tend to reach for some of the greatest achievements of film ever- the Creature Feature. I know, you’re shaking your head at my antics and wondering how I could think these are quality films but listen up- there is nothing better on a grey day then curling up under a blankie with a bowl of popcorn, friends, and a ridiculous creature causing havoc.  Continue reading

When my worlds collide- the creation of crazy in a character

17 Feb

For years, I’ve been curious — what does a script actually say when it calls for a character to be crazy? I know it seems like a weird thing to wonder, but not if you really know me. I have degrees in Psychology and the focus of my research, work, education, and life is a severely dysfunctional population.

Not your mother’s Fairy Tales!

28 Jan

This is not a review. Let me just point that out now.

I saw a screening of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters the other night and I had a fabulous time. I know, there are many who are going to say- “seriously? You enjoyed that?” And to them I say, “Yes”. And here’s why- when I see a movie, I want to be entertained. I don’t want to be lectured at or made to feel bad. To me, a movie is entertainment and therefore I should leave the theater feeling like I’ve had fun. I want to laugh. I want to be exhilarated. I don’t mind a few tears. But the end result of my time is that I want to have been entertained. And it doesn’t even have to be a good film (we know I adore my bad movies)- as long as I come out of it not feeling like I just wasted 2 hours of my life.

Great Trek Debate, chapter 3- Those Dastardly Villains

15 Nov

Not too long ago I launched a poll to see who you felt was the greatest foe in the Star Trek universe. The poll is still open, but as of now the results are pretty weighted in favor of the Borg. For this chapter of the look into Star Trek, I want to take a gander at some of the villains our heroes have gone up against. Let’s start with those pesky with poll results- Continue reading

Great Trek Debate, chapter 2- the films

28 Sep

It’s time again to take a gander at Star Trek and discuss… the films. There are eleven films, counting the reboot in 2009. Inspired by my recent Trek weekend I opted to watch the few that either I’d blocked out or hadn’t seen (yes, there was one I had never seen!). And now here I am to discuss them… so put down your phasers, grab a romulan ale, and let’s take a gander at the many films of Star Trek!

The Great Trek Debate, chapter 1- Captain

2 Sep

I was raised, as loyal readers know, on classic Star Trek. So when a new series starts, you better believe I’m there watching. Of course, there hasn’t been a new one for a bit but series come out on Hulu and Netflix, as well as HD DVD releases all the time, so it’s a perfect time to catch up!

So as I began watching Enterprise on Amazon, I started thinking about some of the strengths of Star Trek. Let’s start these posts with a look at the captains. Continue reading

Expendables 3: Ladies’ Night

31 Aug

Let me just make a disclaimer that I don’t think I’ve actually sat through all of the first Expendables Movie (although I have it in bluray on my shelf…) nor have I seen it’s sequel. But I, being a fan of the action genre as a whole, really really wish there was a female version of this movie.

Movies in a minute

27 Aug

I don’t go out to the movies often because it’s too expensive. I used to, but LA theaters pretty much require a kidney before you can get in. And since I need both of mine, well… I watch a lot more DVDs then I do films in the theater. (Unless it’s a screening)

However, in the last few weeks I’ve managed to to a few summer movies- probably spoilers here. Continue reading
