Dusting Off The Shelf: Letter A

3 Jan

Starting a new series of posts this year… the goal being a post every week. I’ll be doing a movie review of sorts, picking a title out of my DVD collection (at least until I run out of titles!) that I’ve never seen… and each week I’ll be following the alphabet. So… to start off, I’m picking Austenland. Continue reading

I watched BATMAN V SUPERMAN: THE ULTIMATE EDITION!

Stewart here…

Unlike our beloved NerdLush head honcho, I have not really discussed with you all my thoughts on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. So let me start off my saying that BvS is not the worst movie ever made (maybe the worst comic book movie of 2016, but that’s only SO FAR…), BUT there’s way too many pacing and story issues that don’t make it good. It’s like shoving 15 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound bag and realizing some important material fell out during the bag filling. So when I heard of a longer version coming to Blu-ray, I was guardedly excited. Continue reading

Ghost In The Machine — a PERSON OF INTEREST primer

Stewart here…

CAUTION: mild SPOILERS ahead…

A bit of setup: just on a brief splurge a few years back, I picked up the the first season of Person of Interest on DVD. I had heard about it, but being on CBS, a network I rarely if at all watched (and being one of the only shows without a NCIS, CSI, or Criminal Minds in the title), I had serious reservations. What surprised me was the rather high concept procedural-esque setup was one that evolved over that first season and the seasons afterwards. It reminded me of what happened to another TV show that was produced by J.J. Abrams, Fringe, in that its concept evolved into a more complex, subversive, and morally gray story. Some of that comes from the show’s creator, Jonathan Nolan (brother of big time director Christopher Nolan), who is bringing some big ideas about current and future technology into play in an network action drama. Awkward! Don’t forget the importance of music!

12 Sep

Have you ever watched the deleted scenes on a DVD and scene your favorite characters having a conversation in a dance club? Awkward! It’s nothing but the dialogue fighting to be heard over the shuffling feet of extras pretending to look sexy while dancing with no music.

It should be pointed out that there is an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were there is no background music- when Joyce dies- but it’s still gone through post production and had those awkward none relevant sounds removed so as not to pull focus from the rest of the emotionally driven episode. Continue reading

Marathons… not just for runners anymore!

18 Dec

You know what’s truly sad? Staring at this space does not magically make a post appear. Especially when I get so easily distracted by the marathon of Eureka running on my TV.

Oh… wait.  Continue reading

Gag Reels- show me the funny!

29 Jul

I’ve been down for the count all week with Con Crud leftover from SDCC, which translates to a DVD marathon. I’m catching up on Supernatural because I’m a season and a half behind due to not liking an event in season 7. So… I have to catch up- which means I need to start at the beginning.  Continue reading

Eureka! There be gold in that there TV show!

17 Dec

For years I’ve lived in a bit of a bubble- some of it by choice, most of it due to necessity. I don’t get out to movies often (those things are frickin’ expensive!). I don’t listen to the radio because everything sounds the same (my recent addiction to the broadway channel on my xm is different)(see my post on my eclectic mp3 collection). And I don’t get into too many new shows. I don’t have TV, cable or otherwise, and haven’t gotten decent reception for years… I live on DVDs and what can be found on the internet. So it kills me when people go crazy for a new show. Especially when that show doesn’t magically appear on Hulu etc to give me a chance to watch it too. Continue reading

DVD Commentaries… yay or nay?

5 Aug

As I watch my Farscape DVDs (or the recently released Leverage s4), I’ve taken to watching the commentaries- something I usually only do after having watched the show/film multiple times first. Continue reading
