Take a seat- I have something to say about mental illness

13 Aug

You will have bad times, but they will always wake you up to the stuff you weren’t paying attention to. ~ Robin Williams

I’m going off book today. I try to keep my real life and NerdLush separate but I think today it’s okay…

Earlier this week we lost a comedic treasure. Robin Williams had been a force of nature throughout my life. I can remember watching Mork & Mindy when I was a wee little one.

Hunting the Wild Barrowman

15 Apr

One would think that this mission- a picture with John Barrowman- would not be a difficult task, but this is a mission 5 years in the making! But in order to tell the story, I have to start at the beginning-

Captain-Jack-Harkness-John-barrowman-and-David-Tennant-doctor-who-34840887-600-480In the fall of 2006, I had uprooted myself from sunny California to the great city of Chicago in order to complete a masters degree. Through the social networking and fandoms at the time, I was blessed with friends all over the world- but none in Chicago. The closest people I knew were relatives in Wisconsin (who I didn’t really know) and a dear friend at the southern end of Illinois. So… as I waited for classes to start and semi wandered the city to acclimate myself, I also dug into shows and movies that I had missed. One such was the 2005 Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston. Now I remember watching DW as a kid on PBS (though I couldn’t tell you who my first Doctor was) and I know I watched the 1996 telefilm on FOX with the 8th Doctor, but I really didn’t know much about the series. So I went to the theatre… and learned about quantum objects.

I want to sit here and tell you all about NerdLush friend, Kirsten Vangsness’, one woman show, MESS, but honestly there is no way for me to describe it to you. I could tell you that it is a magical one hour plus of comedic genius- complete with musical numbers and choreography. Or I could tell you it was about kittens.

None of that actually tells you anything. But it is probably the best I can do. Continue reading

My Latest Obsession- part 5

23 Sep

I’m back with the final piece to my Karl Urban obsession. Just checking but… you’ve read 1, 2, 3, and 4, right? Well, then… let’s just dive in, shall we? Continue reading

My Latest Obsession- part 4

15 Sep

And I’m back with the 4th of 5 posts regarding all the things ever (or at least the ones available to me in the US) done by Karl Urban. You’ve read 1, 2, and 3, right? There might be a quiz later.

My Latest Obsession- part 3

7 Sep

And I’m back! I know… you’re dying to find out what made the cut for my obsession with Karl Urban, part 3. You’ve read parts 1 & 2, right? Well… for this installment I have put together four films that range from science fiction fun to wacky vampire violence, to confusing fairy tale and finally a suspenseful drama. It’s an odd mix, I admit, but overall a good collection of flicks. Continue reading

Ben Affleck: Not Here to Destroy Batman

3 Sep

It’s been over a week since the new Batman actor was announced, and the internet exploded with cruel comments and shock. Well, now that it has died down a bit I can honestly say… I AM SO EXCITED FOR BEN AFFLECK TO BE BATMAN! Continue reading

My Latest Obsession- part 2

28 Aug

I’m back with part two of my ultimate review of all things Karl Urban. Did you read part 1? Well, review it if you didn’t because I’m about to dig into three more projects. Continue reading

My Latest Obsession- part 1

20 Aug

My mother would say I am easily amused. I would add to that with the admission that I am easily obsessed. Since I wrote my post reviewing Almost Human for AFC, I have been consumed by a need to see all the things done by Karl Urban. All the things. Even the terribly horribly bad ones- of course, we know I love those bad movies, so I know this surprises no one.

Not gonna lie… Karl Urban is pretty damn awesome. Continue reading

San Diego Comic-con- I survived Con Crud!

2 Aug

This is probably the last significant post we’ll do about SDCC 2013, but I wanted to do a personal round up of my time there. Last year’s post still gets regular hits, so for some reason this sort of thing is of interest.
