Don’t Let The Heat Kill Your Nerdery!

5 Jul

I spent this week visiting my family in Central California… I am an idiot. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family- but it’s been blazing hot there! It was 109 almost every day I was home. Soooooo very very hot!

All I could stand to do was watch TV, float in the pool, and run errands early in the day. When I left LA it was supposed to be 90. Which is hot for LA. But when I got home, I appreciated the coolness of that temp! So much more livable!

So while I ponder what things are still fun in the summer heat, first I want to put it out to you- what things do you, my fellow nerds, find to do in the summers? Any places you love to go to beat the heat? Any particular things you do?

I think that I usually hang out at home with DVDs, maybe on the cooler days take a roadtrip with a friend, and I know that I love going to the movies on hot summer days. I’ll be back with a list after I hear back from you.

What about you?

Last year I wrote a brief post about spending the fourth of July- Independence Day here in the United States- watching the “classic” Dean Devlin film, Independence Day. Had some trouble coming up with a topic for this year, but in the end I decided to make a list of some of the best things to watch on this holiday. This is totally biased to my tastes- I’d love to hear what you think!

Television Graveyard- plot 5, Dark Angel

27 Jun

Alright… I’m back to talk “Girl Power”. Or… um… wait, I’m actually here to talk about a sci-fi “gem” from the early 2000’s that I passed on originally. Probably for good reason. But having recently sat to watch the entire thing- well, let’s just say I think it’s one that if you haven’t seen, you should. Probably.

The problem is- I can’t decide if I actually like the show or not. But that’s neither here nor there at the moment… let’s first talk about the show. Welcome to Dark Angel.

NerdLush Asks~ Let’s Make a Movie with Kirsten Vangsness

21 Jun

If you’re new, you won’t know this about me so I’ll just spell it out for you- I love helping independent art get created. I also love movies. And TV, but that’s not important right now. What is important is that today’s NerdLush Asks is devoted to an independent film. Well… and some TV and geek speak. But that’s par for the course around here, right?

Well let’s dig in- Film Noir refers to a period or style of film, that portrayed a “darkness and cynicism that was not seen before“. A harsh view of reality and a disillusionment that was felt by the American people following World War II colored the medium; rejecting the happy go lucky style of propaganda previously produced during this period. Interestingly, though the style has decreased immensely over the years, several modern films fit- Blade Runner being one of the stand-outs along with L.A. Confidential (a more obvious choice to fit the category).

Kill Me, Deadly

Kill Me, Deadly

I am by no means an expert on film or genre- I like what I like. And I like Noir films. There is something beautiful about the simplicity of films from the 1940’s, but the grittiness of Noir films… stunning.

Kirsten VangsnessSo why is this a topic of discussion today? Because one of my favorite actresses is currently creating, producing, starring in, and presenting for funding help a piece of noir. Well, actually it’s a noir spoof. Which, honestly, makes me want to see it even more. I had the opportunity to chat with Kirsten Vangsness (best known for her role on Criminal Minds) about the kickstarter campaign for Kill Me, Deadly. Continue reading

Convention Do’s & Don’ts… Or How to Survive a Weekend of Convention Fun.

17 Jun

Well… someone asked the other day what some of the things she needed to do to prep for SDCC (her first trip). I thought I’d put together a list of important things to remember when attending a convention but other than my CosPlay rules, I couldn’t find anything. Guess that means I need to write it.

Much Ado About… Everything.

9 Jun

Yes, I am going to jump on the nerd bandwagon and tell you to go now and see this tiny little indie gem, from Joss Whedon and friends… Much Ado About Nothing. But let me be serious for a moment- go now. Get up from your computer and go. Well, go now if you live in New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Go on June 21st for the rest of the US. And honestly, I forget the date for the UK etc. So look it up and go.

“Much Ado About Nothing” is my favorite Shakespeare play. I fell in love with it in high school, when the Kenneth Branagh film was released. Til tonight that was my definitive interpretation.  Continue reading

Upcoming Nerd Adventure

3 Jun

As you know, we enjoy wandering out and having nerd fun. Our last adventure was to the renaissance and pleasure fair. So this short post is to see if there would be interest in a nerd adventure to visit JPL. Come on… it’s science! Space!

We are suckers for space around here… the crew were all sitting around our various homes watching Curiosity’s landing last year. I have the NASA channel on my TV so that I can watch whenever I want.

Personally, I’m a wee bit jealous when people in my tweeterfeed go on about their visits to JPL… I wanna go to. So come with us. Let’s go learn about space!

If I can just have 5 minutes of your time ~ Shelf Life

1 Jun

So… I was trying to figure out which web series to talk about for this post and then it hit me in the face that while we promote Shelf Life on the twitter and facebook pages, and we’ve done interviews, we have never made a post simply about the show. Well, season 4 just finished “airing” the other day, so this is the perfect time, right? I agree.

Television Graveyard- plot 4, Manimal

30 May

I was inspired to dig up this posts old television series when a UK friend asked on twitter if it had been a real show or just a figment of his imagination. It was indeed a real show. And one that I remember fondly. No matter how ridiculous the plot actually was.
