A very popular panel at WonderCon 2014 centered on the subject of Psychology of Cult TV shows. A full room including a standing back row watched as a panel of psychology experts discussed the rich subject matter that made up this topic in both its fictional context and its potential real-world impact. The panel included Dr. Janina Scarlet (The Superhero Manual), Josué Cardona (Geek Therapy), Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), and NerdLush Diva herself Elizabeth Ann.

25 AprDue to a double post day on Wednesday, there’s nothing ready to run today. I know… bad form. I could let it go and just skip the day, but I would prefer to run something. Personally, I’m working on my next piece looking at the psychology of characters, but it won’t be ready for a bit. And there’s a guest piece in the works on my recent panel at WonderCon (along with video of the panel), but again… not ready to run today. Here is a link to The Mary Sue review of the panel, in case you haven’t seen it. I’m kind of excited to be mentioned in The Mary Sue.

Hunting the Wild Barrowman
15 AprOne would think that this mission- a picture with John Barrowman- would not be a difficult task, but this is a mission 5 years in the making! But in order to tell the story, I have to start at the beginning-
In the fall of 2006, I had uprooted myself from sunny California to the great city of Chicago in order to complete a masters degree. Through the social networking and fandoms at the time, I was blessed with friends all over the world- but none in Chicago. The closest people I knew were relatives in Wisconsin (who I didn’t really know) and a dear friend at the southern end of Illinois. So… as I waited for classes to start and semi wandered the city to acclimate myself, I also dug into shows and movies that I had missed. One such was the 2005 Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston. Now I remember watching DW as a kid on PBS (though I couldn’t tell you who my first Doctor was) and I know I watched the 1996 telefilm on FOX with the 8th Doctor, but I really didn’t know much about the series. Marvel Studios continues the expansion of its super hero universe with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, an espionage thriller that is set up to change everything we know about the inner workings of the government agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Chris Evans returns in the title role and we also see newcomers Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford in addition to familiar faces like Samuel L. 2014 Con Season is in full swing!
30 MarThe convention season has gone from being a late spring through early fall series of events to year round. Which makes it sort of silly to refer to it a season, but most people do not attend conventions year round- the biggest events are still centered within the traditional calendar, with smaller, regional (but good sized!) events occurring the rest of the year.
Already in 2014 we’ve seen some amazing moments happen at conventions- you all saw the pic of Stan Lee “breaking up a fight” between Lou Ferrigno and Chris Hemsworth from Wizard World Sacramento, right? Brilliant! And just this weekend, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s “Deathlok” (J. August Richards) palled around with Arrow‘s “Oliver Queen” (Stephen Amell) at Emerald City Comic-con. Astute fans also remember Richards as “Mr. Blank” in a first season episode of Arrow (he was merciless!). Continue reading
