A change in character

Batfleck by Steve Scott

Batfleck by Steve Scott

If you don’t know, several weeks ago Fox announced the new line-up for the Fantastic Four reboot and it got people talking. A lot. Not in the same way people talked about Ben Affleck being cast as the next Bruce Wayne/Batman, this had nothing to do with the actors credentials, it was because the actor in question is black. Hunting the Wild Barrowman

15 Apr

One would think that this mission- a picture with John Barrowman- would not be a difficult task, but this is a mission 5 years in the making! But in order to tell the story, I have to start at the beginning-

Captain-Jack-Harkness-John-barrowman-and-David-Tennant-doctor-who-34840887-600-480In the fall of 2006, I had uprooted myself from sunny California to the great city of Chicago in order to complete a masters degree. Through the social networking and fandoms at the time, I was blessed with friends all over the world- but none in Chicago. The closest people I knew were relatives in Wisconsin (who I didn’t really know) and a dear friend at the southern end of Illinois. So… as I waited for classes to start and semi wandered the city to acclimate myself, I also dug into shows and movies that I had missed. One such was the 2005 Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston. Now I remember watching DW as a kid on PBS (though I couldn’t tell you who my first Doctor was) and I know I watched the 1996 telefilm on FOX with the 8th Doctor, but I really didn’t know much about the series. Television Graveyard- plot 7, The Dresden Files

11 Apr

Following my recent Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. marathon, I marathoned Arrow– which as you know, is a favorite here at NerdLush. And my adoration for Paul Blackthorne was awakened… additionally, he has been super awesome to NerdLush on twitter, which warms the black pits of my hearts. Of course, this means that I pulled out a favorite single season television series- The Dresden Files.

In 2000, Jim Butcher introduced the character of Harry Dresden in the novel, “Storm Front”. The character, a wizard P.I., is a consultant to the Chicago Police Department- think Sam Spade but add magic. There are now over a dozen novels in print.

Favorite Blogs!

28 Dec

OK, confession time… It’s the end of the year and I’m on vacation (so are the rest of the NerdLush crew, apparently) and I have no posts lined up. So… the most recent posts have been thought up about an hour before they are scheduled to run. But… that doesn’t mean I don’t mean what they say! Lots of good stuff, I think. I have vacation brain and would spend the entire day in my Cookie Monster footie pjs if I could.

So… today, I’ve decided to do another list and link to some of my favorite nerdy (and not so nerdy) blogs and sites. Continue reading

NerdLush Asks~ Let’s Make a Movie with Kirsten Vangsness

21 Jun

If you’re new, you won’t know this about me so I’ll just spell it out for you- I love helping independent art get created. I also love movies. And TV, but that’s not important right now. What is important is that today’s NerdLush Asks is devoted to an independent film. Well… and some TV and geek speak. But that’s par for the course around here, right?

Well let’s dig in- Film Noir refers to a period or style of film, that portrayed a “darkness and cynicism that was not seen before“. A harsh view of reality and a disillusionment that was felt by the American people following World War II colored the medium; rejecting the happy go lucky style of propaganda previously produced during this period. Interestingly, though the style has decreased immensely over the years, several modern films fit- Blade Runner being one of the stand-outs along with L.A. Confidential (a more obvious choice to fit the category).

Kill Me, Deadly

Kill Me, Deadly

I am by no means an expert on film or genre- I like what I like. And I like Noir films. There is something beautiful about the simplicity of films from the 1940’s, but the grittiness of Noir films… stunning.

Kirsten VangsnessSo why is this a topic of discussion today? Because one of my favorite actresses is currently creating, producing, starring in, and presenting for funding help a piece of noir. Well, actually it’s a noir spoof. Which, honestly, makes me want to see it even more. I had the opportunity to chat with Kirsten Vangsness (best known for her role on Criminal Minds) about the kickstarter campaign for Kill Me, Deadly. Continue reading

Ruining a Genre: Popularity of Twilight and Hunger Games

6 May

Life isn’t perfect, in fact often it is quite the opposite. Despite the efforts we make day in and day out, not everything goes our way. That is what makes dystopian novels and movies so intriguing and interesting. Its our world, but slightly off. It gives the possibility of ‘what if.’ Usually it’s something like a war, or sickness, or government battle that changes the world, but it is also something feasible, and that is why it is terrifying. So… I read a book ~ Mockingjay Review

10 Jan

(Caution – SPOILER ALERT!)

Like everyone else in the world, I bought the first book in the much-hyped Hunger Games series just to see what all the fuss was about. Not that I expected to enjoy it, of course. I expected to flick through, read the occasional paragraph and quietly titter to myself, and end by boomeranging the darned thing to the nearest thrift store, where it would take its place amongst at many Read-It-Once-And-Go-“Oh, so THAT’S whodunit!” Dan Brown books and the twelve vinyl copies of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album that I believe every US charity shop is now required by law to carry.

To my surprise (and initial annoyance), I thoroughly enjoyed it. Don’t tell anyone, but in fact I found myself so swept up by the cliffhanger ending of Book 1 that I rushed out and bought Books 2 and 3. Continue reading

Buy Me A Pint with Galactic Credits — Stewart’s Favorite Fictional Drinking Buddies

17 May

Now, I preface this by saying there are some mild spoilers, so be warned, dear reader…

First off, I’m not one of those guys who goes out regularly, let alone with relatives or friends on a weekend to hammer down a few beers and have some fun.  Not that I have crap relatives or friends to hang out with for options, its just not my style.  However, on the rare occasion when I do, I find myself often being the designated driver, which is like the equivalent of being third string quarterback in a football team, and by that I mean, sitting bored out of my ass taking care of drunken fools.  So with that thought in mind, I decided to form my own league of fictional characters I would enjoy going to a bar with and not worry about being the only sober one. NerdLush Asks~ Interview with an author…

11 Apr

Have you ever looked around your friends and realized that you know some pretty amazing people? I have. There are the usual people- old friends and new, full of amazing stories and skills. There are those that come into our lives for brief moments, and others we can’t seem to get rid of. And there are those people who we peg as being one way- rocker chick, for example- but have this hidden gift that you have to get to know them in order to learn about. My friend Tash is like that.
