Why After 50 Years, STAR TREK Is Still Important

8 Sep

Stewart here…

For many nerds like me, and I assume you for reading this, this week is a particularly important one for us. This week (or specifically September 8th) marks the first airing of the original Star Trek TV series, all the way back in September 8th, 1966. That episode, “The Man Trap”, wasn’t even the first produced episode for the show, but the network scheduled it as the series premiere. Watching it even now as I assumed back then for many viewers at the time, you would find it hard to believe this would create a multitude of series, movies, novels, and comic books that would last through half a century. Yet it has, and through all of the high and lows, somehow persevered through now generations of fans. Continue reading

How 30 Years Ago, TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE Destroyed My Childhood

4 Sep

Stewart here…

As much as I have heard the phrase “this _______ remake destroyed my childhood” over the years, I never really subscribed to it. It always seemed like the fall back thing to say for nerds and pop culture obsessives to say when something was brought back with a different slant (and if you don’t believe me, read the bro centric and lady phobic comments over the last year to the recent Ghostbusters movie). Oh there are some remakes that warrant such disdain, either because they are too bland or they don’t push far enough to be something different, but destroying your childhood? Childhood is nothing but trauma, so I never understood it. Which is why when discussing the destruction of my childhood, I point out the movie that destroyed my childhood, that unlike most grown nerds, destroyed it during my childhood: 1986’s TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE. Out and About in the Central Valley- Modesto Con

19 Jul

Since moving HQ from LA to the Central Valley in 2014, we’ve tried to ensure that we take in the local nerdy scene. Growing up in the area, I remember having a few decent events when I was a kid and then nothing for a solid 10 years. Thus… it’s been a lot of fun checking out some of the local conventions and seeing the community grow.

We recently had the opportunity to hop in the car for an hour plus drive to head to Modesto for a convention. Now… I cannot remember the last time I actually stopped the car in Modesto… but it’s one of the little towns in the Valley with a lot of fun history. You might remember it as the town from American GraffitiContinue reading

Another WonderCon survival story!

20 May

I’ve been sitting on my thoughts about WonderCon 2016 for a bit now because I was bitter about being there alone this year… but that wasn’t WonderCon’s fault. So I’ve decided to draft my thoughts and just move on.

Save yourself and avoid Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

3 Apr

To start- you need to understand that this post is MY opinion and that if you differ from it, that’s A-OK because we are two different people. Also, I will not be holding back regarding what I’m going to discuss- so assume spoilers will be presented.

Now to the topic at hand- I have seen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

2016 brings a lot of Nerd fun with it…

3 Jan

It’s a new year and time to look back on the last year and determine how to make this one even better. And with all of the exciting films and TV shows coming soon, 2016 is looking pretty awesome. Or it could be a miserable failure.

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, year 5

15 Nov

One of the great things about attending all 5 years of Stan Lee’s Comikaze is that we’ve been able to observe the convention grow and change every year. This year the event grew to having two halls of LA’s Convention Center. We noted last year that it wasn’t quite big enough for us to travel for the event to attend for multiple days- we discussed on our travels home that this year, we felt it was almost a requirement ro come multiple days.

Community is what we make of it

28 Sep

We’ve talked a few times about friendships and community that come along with fandom and connecting with others. Personally, I think it’s a very important thing- being able to connect with others who enjoy the same things. For some people, those relationships can be some of the strongest in their lives (or even, the only meaningful relationships they have). Continue reading
