Recently, Emily and I made our way to Irwindale to attend the annual Renaissance Pleasure Faire. The faire runs from early April through mid-May. We went together in 2012 and while we had fun, the heat was such that we both got sunburnt and were grumpy by the time we got home afterwards. We planned better this year and arrived at the faire a little after 2pm and stayed til almost closing. This allowed us to arrive at the height of the heat but remain as the sun dropped and the heat lessened. Also, there was a fire in the hills near by, so as a bonus we got to enjoy watching a fire rescue chopper take water from the reservoir. The other attendees and participants at the faire kept calling it a dragon- it was both cute and weird. Continue reading
I’m going to start off by saying that it’s difficult to attend a con for a single day (especially when it is the last day of the con) when all of the tweets and facebook posts about the con during the previous days make you desperate to be there. I mean… the Geek and Sundry Tabletop Day was happening during WonderCon… and OMG! so many awesome people there! Which means that those people would be at WonderCon all day… which means that I fail for not being there on Tabletop Day. Sigh. Initially, I had intended to be at WonderCon all weekend but life happens and I didn’t want to miss celebrating my friend Phil X‘s birthday at his surprise party. Priorities, amiright? Sigh. So… a wee bit ago, we at NerdLush celebrated six months of nerdery with a costumed karaoke party with friends and fans. I admit to being a wee bit nervous before the event… I mean, this is LA! People RSVP for things here all the time (and then don’t show up!) (or the opposite-show up without an RSVP). And up til the actual party night- after arriving at the venue- there was that little whisper saying I should be ready with “It’s my party, I’ll cry if I want to”… but then… everyone (plus more awesome people) showed up. And sang. And had costumes. And laughed. And had fun. And it was AWESOME.
The only thing that made me sad is that Stewart wasn’t able to be there with us. 😦 Continue reading

Generally I hit up Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. And I’ve done a corn maze/haunted house deal out at Pierce College. I’d like to hit the Queen Mary this year- Emily went last year and said it was quite good. What else in LA area should I look into?

So… years ago I was at SDCC with my brother and while waiting in line for a panel (the big line, for Ballroom 20) we started discussing the people CosPlaying that walked by. This conversation led to my Rules for CosPlaying. I’ve fine tuned them since then and after my recent visit to WonderCon 2012, I wrote them up for AFC. 🙂 (AFC has a bigger audience so it was the better choice for posting, in case you were wondering why the original post is there and not here). In any case- it’s a humorous read, but I am very serious about every point I make. And if you CosPlay, or know someone who does, or even if you just like to dress up for Halloween, these rules may save your day! Check it out- leave comments!
