Why After 50 Years, STAR TREK Is Still Important

For many nerds like me, and I assume you for reading this, this week is a particularly important one for us. This week (or specifically September 8th) marks the first airing of the original Star Trek TV series, all the way back in September 8th, 1966. That episode, “The Man Trap”, wasn’t even the first produced episode for the show, but the network scheduled it as the series premiere. Watching it even now as I assumed back then for many viewers at the time, you would find it hard to believe this would create a multitude of series, movies, novels, and comic books that would last through half a century. How 30 Years Ago, TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE Destroyed My Childhood

As much as I have heard the phrase “this _______ remake destroyed my childhood” over the years, I never really subscribed to it. It always seemed like the fall back thing to say for nerds and pop culture obsessives to say when something was brought back with a different slant (and if you don’t believe me, read the bro centric and lady phobic comments over the last year to the recent Ghostbusters movie). Oh there are some remakes that warrant such disdain, either because they are too bland or they don’t push far enough to be something different, but destroying your childhood? Childhood is nothing but trauma, so I never understood it. Which is why when discussing the destruction of my childhood, I point out the movie that destroyed my childhood, that unlike most grown nerds, destroyed it during my childhood: 1986’s TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE. I watched BATMAN V SUPERMAN: THE ULTIMATE EDITION!

Unlike our beloved NerdLush head honcho, I have not really discussed with you all my thoughts on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. So let me start off my saying that BvS is not the worst movie ever made (maybe the worst comic book movie of 2016, but that’s only SO FAR…), BUT there’s way too many pacing and story issues that don’t make it good. It’s like shoving 15 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound bag and realizing some important material fell out during the bag filling. Ghost In The Machine — a PERSON OF INTEREST primer

CAUTION: mild SPOILERS ahead…

A bit of setup: just on a brief splurge a few years back, I picked up the the first season of Person of Interest on DVD. I had heard about it, but being on CBS, a network I rarely if at all watched (and being one of the only shows without a NCIS, CSI, or Criminal Minds in the title), I had serious reservations. What surprised me was the rather high concept procedural-esque setup was one that evolved over that first season and the seasons afterwards. It reminded me of what happened to another TV show that was produced by J.J. Abrams, Fringe, in that its concept evolved into a more complex, subversive, and morally gray story. Some of that comes from the show’s creator, Jonathan Nolan (brother of big time director Christopher Nolan), who is bringing some big ideas about current and future technology into play in an network action drama. Legends of Tomorrow, “Legendary” recap

Welcome back! It’s season finale time, and the team has had to contend with some major reveals, like how they’ve been manipulated by the Time Masters to help Vandal Savage secure a place of power on Earth. That manipulation was to stop an alien invasion in the future, but it also went further, into Rip’s superiors ordering the death of his family! To stick it to the Time Dicks, Snart sacrifices himself to destroy their ability to look into the timeline. That still leaves Kendra and Carter prisoner of Savage, on board his own timeship. Also, the team has been detained by the Time Masters, minus a missing Snart and Sara. Rip is also locked away, and Savage lets his adversary know he has to go to a long awaited appointment to kill Rip’s family!
