13 Jul

Stewart here…

Well, its another day at the San Diego Comic-Con, and news is kind of slow here.  Nothing earth-shattering along the lines of The Sandman announcement yesterday has broken yet.  The majority of the day has been about your favorite TV shows returning this fall.  So let’s go with….

First: TV! Continue reading

San Diego COMIC-CON 2012 News Round-Up Day -1 (Warm-Up)

11 Jul

The San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) isn’t starting until Thursday (unless you count the preview night of some of the upcoming series coming up this fall later today), but that doesn’t mean early news is starting to leak in regarding some of the big announcements and events coming up.  Keep checking in over the weekend for some on the ground photos and commentary complied from from NerdLush hostess Elizabeth Ann, plus yours truly bringing you a round-up of the news (and my snarky responses) coming out of Comic-Con.

As Long As I Don’t Wear Tights or Spandex, Issue 3 — PAX ROMANA

PAX ROMANA by Jonathan Hickman (Image Comics/collected)

If anything can be learned from time travel stories, its that meddling with the past can have unintended consequences.  One of the best examples of this is the now late Ray Bradbury’s classic short story A Sound of Thunder, where a simple bug being crushed changes the entire course of human history.  With all the infinite possibilities for disaster the notion of going back to the past presents, you would think such an idea would not be cavalierly pursued.  The concept of writer/artist Jonathan Hickman’s time travel world-building epic Pax Romana is that even with a unified purpose, things still can change in a surprising way. As much as I love a decent comic and been a big comic book reader since I was a little tot, I appreciate it when someone goes and tries to do something beyond the superhero genre.  But, there is still a bit of the stigma that comics are just for kids or adults in arrested development (and those people who believe that are usually speaking out of their ass).  So, for those of who are not big fans of heroes in tights or just want a change from the norm, I’m taking a few paragraphs to spotlight comics that you may want to check out either monthly, collected, or in digital form.  With that out of the way, let’s get to it… Continue reading

Buy Me A Pint with Galactic Credits — Stewart’s Favorite Fictional Drinking Buddies

17 May

Now, I preface this by saying there are some mild spoilers, so be warned, dear reader…

First off, I’m not one of those guys who goes out regularly, let alone with relatives or friends on a weekend to hammer down a few beers and have some fun.  Not that I have crap relatives or friends to hang out with for options, its just not my style.  However, on the rare occasion when I do, I find myself often being the designated driver, which is like the equivalent of being third string quarterback in a football team, and by that I mean, sitting bored out of my ass taking care of drunken fools.  So with that thought in mind, I decided to form my own league of fictional characters I would enjoy going to a bar with and not worry about being the only sober one. Equality in my comics!

Last fall, I got inspired by a conversation with a friend to rant on PL about the inequality of costumes in comic books. Continue reading
