If you’ve been living under a rock (like me) then you might have been surprised to find out that there was a new Doctor for Doctor Who announced the other day at 11am Pacific Time. I for one, wouldn’t have known at all, had it not been for all of the Facebook pages and all of twitter going nuts over this announcement as if it were the next dawning of Christ Himself…. thank you, twitterbook.
So who is the new Doc?
Like a lot of tweets, I feel this is an odd move. I definitely feel like this is a bit anti-climactic in many ways (once again a white male, womp womp) but more importantly (and more interesting) he’s not eye candy.
Since the reboot of Doctor Who, all of the Doctors have been, well…. really really ridiculously good looking. Doctor 9 was broody and had that injured warrior type thing going for him, Doctor 10 made the world swoon with his eyebrows, and Doc 11 is just so gosh darn childlike and cute! And maybe there’s more to being the Doctor than being really, really ridiculously good looking! That being said, the Doctor (until the reboot) has generally been an older bloke, so the choice to go back to that sort of casting isn’t really that new or, let’s face it, interesting. What is interesting is that the producers are choosing to cast an older man now when casting based on looks is more prevalent than ever and just based on my twitter and Facebook feeds, all the outspoken die-hard Doctor Who fans are in the female demographic ranging 20-40 and all have the hots for our Dreamy Doctor.
So what does this mean? I don’t think it’s going to really change anything except for maybe a less of a foaming-at-the-mouth fan base for the show for a little while, but it’s not really going to change the fact that Doctor Who is a brilliant show on TV. Of course, like everyone else, had my own dream pick for The Doctor: Richard Ayoade.
So riddle me this, Lushites: who would you cast for the Doctor?
I would have liked to see a woman get the part.
A lot of people would have and for whatever reason (and you know I’m super gung-ho about giving women leading roles that don’t require them to need a love interest for a life purpose) the idea of a female doctor doesn’t quite sit with me right. I can’t quite explain it… That being said, when Donna (spoiler alert) was given part of the Doctor’s mind I was *super excited* to see a Doctor Donna and wanted that to go off and be a Big Thing, which of course never happened so… yeah. If you could cast a woman to fill the shoes, who would you specifically choose?
That was my problem, I couldn’t think of who I wanted. 😦
