The end (or is it the beginning) of another award season

It seems like Hollywood- or more accurately, the entertainment industry- spends the entire year patting themselves on the back and handing out awards. Honestly, I only watch one of these shows anymore- the same people/projects seem to win over and over… so there really isn’t a draw for me. But this weekend is the one show I try to catch every year- The Tony Awards.

Why is this the show that draws me in? Other than I feel like theatre actors work harder than TV and film (come on- 8 shows a week in front of a live audience and no opportunity to “cut” and do the scene again?), I think it just comes from growing up learning and attending theatre. Not a lot of opportunity to do TV and film work when I was growing up, so it was less impactful. Plus, there’s the “local girl makes good” piece of The Tony’s wherein Audra McDonald is a multiple statue winner from my hometown. And my high school. And that theatre I worked at growing up… So yeah… that probably has something to do with it.

Another piece I love about watching The Tony awards is the opportunity to see pieces of the shows. For years this was how I learned about new shows that I might enjoy and then got a hold of the album etc. Of course, now we have social media and I follow several Broadway performers, so I’ve been dreaming of seeing them in shows and don’t necessarily need to see them perform at the ceremony… but I still can’t wait.

Additionally, I love the hosts. In particular, I have enjoyed both Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman immensely. So… I cannot wait to see what Hugh brings to the show this year- I’ve been following his social media accounts and he has been having so much fun (apparently) preparing to host the show.
