Welcome to the future! 2015 is here to stay!

1 Jan

Today, as we begin another shiny new year, we say goodbye to 2014. 2014 was a good year for NerdLush- we (I) had the opportunity to speak on panels at a few conventions; NerdLush grew with great guest posters (two of which are now official crew members!- Charity and Marc); and a headquarters move. Here is the flipagram video I made on NYE that shows many of the adventures I had with various crew…  Continue reading

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ward… do we love him? Yes, we do.

26 Jul

At the end of season 1 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Charity and I were working on a post about why we loved Agent Ward. Even though he was with Hydra and evil. Life happened, the finale aired, and we never finished it.

But it has lingered in the back of my mind ever since.

Ward is evil. He is Hydra. But we still love him. Below is an excerpt from the discussion we had regarding Agent Ward. Continue reading

Join us for a drink… OTP – Olicity, Arrow, and More!

5 May

OTP – or One True Pairing – is a fandom term used to denote pairings fans believe are the best couples. This occurs throughout fandom mediums – television shows, books, movies…even “real life people”. In most fandoms, there are fanfics that are written by the fans in order to tell a story, the way they see fit. To be honest, some of the fics are quite well-written with compelling stories. Others… not so much (off-topic, but recently there was an announcement of a “One Direction” fanfic that was being published… excerpts of the book were released as well… it was painful drivel). But these fics also allow for fans to have their OTP as they see fit… something that may go against what the writers of a show or the author of a book series may want (for now anyway).    Continue reading

Guest Post!!!~ WonderCon 2014: Psychology of Cult TV

27 Apr

Charity Tran is a friend of and guest blogger for NerdLush.  In addition to being a full-time nerd, she is a writer and digital strategist who is currently pursuing her doctorate related to fan studies and technical communication. She muses at intellichick.com and tweets from @intellichick. (She is also a frequent conspirator of Nerd Adventures)

A very popular panel at WonderCon 2014 centered on the subject of Psychology of Cult TV shows.  A full room including a standing back row watched as a panel of psychology experts discussed the rich subject matter that made up this topic in both its fictional context and its potential real-world impact.  The panel included Dr. Janina Scarlet (The Superhero Manual), Josué Cardona (Geek Therapy), Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), and NerdLush Diva herself Elizabeth Ann.

The Wonderousness of WonderCon 2014… or how Easter Weekend is going to need a week to recover from

21 Apr

The con season is off to a brilliant start and NerdLush spent this Easter weekend in sunny Anaheim wandering the halls of WonderCon for the third year. Three significant differences from the prior years- a) rather than just going for Sunday, we went for all 3 days, b) rather than being only at the hall and otherwise being at home- we had a hotel room, and c) instead of just being fans, press, or otherwise wandering around innocently, I had been asked to be part of a panel on “The Psychology of Cult TV”. The latter piece will be covered in a separate post because honestly, I don’t remember much of it- my first panel… I was nervous! BUT! I have been told it (and I) was very good. And it felt pretty awesome. Continue reading

Hunting the Wild Barrowman

15 Apr

One would think that this mission- a picture with John Barrowman- would not be a difficult task, but this is a mission 5 years in the making! But in order to tell the story, I have to start at the beginning-

Captain-Jack-Harkness-John-barrowman-and-David-Tennant-doctor-who-34840887-600-480In the fall of 2006, I had uprooted myself from sunny California to the great city of Chicago in order to complete a masters degree. Through the social networking and fandoms at the time, I was blessed with friends all over the world- but none in Chicago. The closest people I knew were relatives in Wisconsin (who I didn’t really know) and a dear friend at the southern end of Illinois. So… as I waited for classes to start and semi wandered the city to acclimate myself, I also dug into shows and movies that I had missed. One such was the 2005 Doctor Who, with Christopher Eccleston. Now I remember watching DW as a kid on PBS (though I couldn’t tell you who my first Doctor was) and I know I watched the 1996 telefilm on FOX with the 8th Doctor, but I really didn’t know much about the series. Yuri’s Night! Epic SPAAAAAACE Party Brings Out The Scientist In Us All!

13 Apr

Last year, I was wandering around Twitter on April 12th and noticed that a lot of people that I loved/followed were all attending a party for “Yuri’s Night”. So I said to myself, “self… what is this Yuri’s Night thing and why am I not at this party?” Oh, I looked- it was completely sold out at that point; so I bookmarked it as something to look at for this year. And then I googled the event and it’s meaning. Continue reading

Guilty Pleasures- Sleepy Hollow

12 Mar

Every year there is at least one TV show that squeezes it’s way into my viewing schedule and steals my heart. In the 2012-2013 season it was Arrow. After seeing the pilot- which I loved- it was clear that the show could go either way. It could suck, burning and dying in an insane death, or it could be awesome. And it was AWESOME. So in the fall of 2013, Fox introduced a show that should’ve died after the second or third episode… but it didn’t.
